Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, Duke of Aosta (1869-1931), spent most of his career in the army, having joined the artillery in July 1887. A decorated war veteran, he led his troops in several battles against Austrian forces between 1915 and 1918 and subsequently received the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Savoy. The monument to him in Turin was inaugurated on 4 July 1937.
