James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck (1740-95) was a Scottish biographer, diarist and lawyer; Samuel Johnson (1709-84) was a poet, playwright, and essayist - but perhaps is most well known as the lexicographer behind A Dictionary of the English Language (published 1755).
