£600-£800

This brooch was bequeathed to Mary Collier, a close personal friend of Mary Coulter, thence by family descent to the present vendor.

Mary B. Coulter
was awarded the Royal Victorian Medal in January 1945 in respect of her services as a nurse to Princess Beatrice over a period of 15 years.

This medal, together with two further medals awarded to Miss Coulter - silver, Jubilee 1935; Coronation 1937, and three related nursing badges, comprising General Nursing Council, silver enamel, the reverse inscribed, 'M.B. Coulter, S.R.N., 31725, 20.6.24'; Royal British Nursing Association, bronze, the reverse inscribed, 'Mary B. Coulter, 7268'; and Manchester Royal Infirmary, bronze, the reverse numbered '449' and inscribed, 'M.B. Coulter'’, were sold at Christie’s Sale No. 1264, 30 November 2000, Lot 346.

This brooch was presented by King George to Mary Coulter in thanks for her services as a nurse to H.R.H. Princess Beatrice (Princess Henry of Battenburg).

Princess Beatrice (Beatrice Mary Victoria Feodore) (1857-1944), later Princess Henry of Battenberg, was the fifth daughter and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
