John Jones was a native of Aidrie, Scotland, and enlisted in the Gordon Highlanders in 1893. He was dangerously wounded, by a gun shot in the left thigh, during the Gordons' gallant assault and capture of the Dargai Heights, 20 October 1897, where Piper George Findlater and Private Edward Lawson won the Victoria Cross.
