Percy Alexander Rawlings was born in Walcot, Somerset, on 20 July 1881 and attested for the Royal Navy on 1 September 1899. Advanced Acting Leading Stoker on 1 January 1914, he was leant, on agreement, for service with the New Zealand Navy for three years from 15 July 1914. He saw service during the Great War in H.M.S. Philomel performing convoy escort duties before conducting operations in the Mediterranean; he saw later service in the Red Sea and Persian Gulf. Advanced Stoker Petty Officer on 7 November 1917, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 14 June 1920, and was shore pensioned on 6 September 1921.
