The Reverend William Joseph Helmore Banks was born in 1854 and served as Missionary, and Chaplain to the Forces, Orange Walk, British Honduras, from 1881 to 1884. Moving to South Africa in the latter year, he served as Incumbent of Stanger, in the diocese of Maritzburg (Natal), from 1885 to 1889; Curate of Pietermaritzburg, in the diocese of Maritzburg, from 1889 to 1891; Rector of St. Simon & St. Jude, Peddie, Eastern Cape, from 1891 to 1892; Rector of St. Augustine’s, Dordrecht, Eastern Cape, from 1892 to 1896; Incumbent of Holy Trinity, Middelburg, Transvaal, from 1896 to 1898; and Vicar of Booysens, Johannesburg, from 1898 to 1901. He served during the Boer War as Acting Chaplain to the Forces, Fourth Class, Army Chaplains’ Department, from 1900 to 1901; and was later Rector of Boksburg, Transvaal, from 1901 to 1906; Rector of Zeerust, Transvaal, from 1906 to 1909; Principal of the College of the Resurrection, Jakhalsfontein, Transvaal, from 1909 to 1912; and Incumbent of Christ Church, Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, from 1912 to 1915. He died in 1925.
