John Garrett Low attested for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and served during the Great War on the Western Front as part of the 8th Reinforcements, Auckland Infantry Regiment. He was severely wounded by gun shot to both arms during the New Zealanders second day in action on the Somme, 16 September 1916, and was discharged home to New Zealand as a result of his wounds.
