Percy Lawrence Court was born in Kentish Town, London, on 9 April 1885 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class on 8 August 1900. Promoted Able Seaman on 9 March 1905, he served during the Great War in a variety of ships and shore based establishments, including H.M.S. Scott from 11 July 1918. On 15 August 1918, while escorting a convoy from the Netherlands to England with the destroyer H.M.S. Ullswater, both Scott and Ullswater were torpedoed by UC-17 near the Dutch coast. Scott’s forward magazine exploded, causing her to sink with the loss of 22 crewmen and several more wounded. Court was amongst those wounded; he was shore demobilised on 1 March 1919, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day.
