Frederick James Smith was born in Devonport on 1 May 1891 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class in January 1907. Qualifying as a Seaman Gunner, he served during the Great War in the Destroyer H.M.S. Owl from the outbreak of War until July 1916, and was present at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. He was discharged, time expired, in July 1921 and subsequently joined the Royal Fleet Reserve.
