Frederick John Cass was born in Newport, Isle of Wight, in 1879 and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Second Class in February 1897. Promoted Petty Officer First Class on 20 November 1910, he was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 11 December 1912, and joined H.M.S. Monarch on 22 June 1913. He served in Monarch for the entirety of the Great War, and was present at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, where Monarch scored a direct hit on the German dreadnought König, and engaged the battle cruiser Lützow. Promoted Chief Petty Officer on 15 March 1919, he was shore demobilised on 21 February 1920, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve.
