William Channell was born in Paddington, London, in 1870 and attested for the Rifle Brigade on 25 April 1892. He served with the 3rd Battalion in India from 24 January 1895, and died of disease at Bannu during the Tochi Valley campaign on 19 November 1897; as the Rifle Brigade Chronicle records, ‘not a single man had been lost in action, but over 120 died from fever and dysentery; by the end we had now only a handful of sound men with us; the others pale, feeble, ands worn out, were either hospital patients or too week to get along without assistance.’
