Walter Halstead Cortis Standford attested for the Army Service Corps and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 27 September 1914. Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 15 August 1917), he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Indian Army Reserve of Officers on 2 July 1918.
