John McFadyen was born at Dunoon, Argyllshire, and attested for the Highland Light Infantry. He served with the 15th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 November 1915, and was awarded the Military Medal for his part in a successful patrol on 13 January 1916, which resulted in the death of three of the enemy. He was killed in action on 3 July 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in an attack on the enemy’s line near the Liepzig Salient. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. An obituary of him, including a photograph, appeared in the Glasgow Evening Times on 25 September 1916.
