William Beattie attested for the Highland Light Infantry and served with the 8th Battalion during the Great War, attached to the 8th Battalion, Royal Scots, on the Western Front from 5 November 1914. He was killed in action during the Battle of Arras on 18 April 1917 and is buried at Faubourg d’Amiens Cemetery, Arras.
