William Macey was born in Brentwood, Essex, and attested for the Highland Light Infantry, serving with them prior to the Great War in India (confirmed as being entitled to the Delhi Durbar Medal 1911). He served with the 1st Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front as part of the Lahore Division from 30 November 1914, and was killed in action on 31 October 1915. He is buried in St. Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg l’Avoue, France.
