Thomas Charles Elmer was born in Boxford, Suffolk, on 24 April 1893, and attested for the Suffolk Regiment at Bury St. Edmunds on 24 August 1914. Posted to the Western Front with the 3rd Battalion, he was discharged no longer physically fit for war service due to a knee condition in 1917.
