Alexander II (1214-1249), Short Cross and Stars coinage, Phase C, Sterling, in the name of William the Lion, Roxburgh, Peris Adam, head right with sceptre, ::willelmvs· rex, rev. peris adam on ro:, voided short cross, four stars of six points in angles, 1.36g/2h (Jones & Sugden dies 8-unrecorded; SCBI 35, 81, same obv. die; cf. B 6b, fig. 67A; S 5034). Good fine, rare £200-£300

Rather like the immobilisation of Henry II’s name during the reigns of Richard I and John, the name William continued to be used on the coinage well into the reign of Alexander II - probably until the mid 1230s.
