On 5 March 1681, the value of the 4 Merk piece was raised from 53/8d to 56/-, the Merk then becoming referred to as Fourteen Shillings in the Mint documents. The terms ‘Dollar’, ‘Quarter-Dollar’ etc were never officially used but became common in popular speech.
