David II (1329-1371), First coinage, Second issue, Sterling, mm. cross pattée, bust left with sceptre, large composite lettering, rev. rex sco tto rvm, long cross, four mullets of six points in angles, medium lettering, 1.04g/8h (Savage 1/ae; Burns/Dakers Bust 1/Dakers Reverse 3; SCBI –; B 3, fig. 230, same dies; cf. S 5087). About very fine £150-£200

Coins of the early type, with larger lettering adhere to a weight standard of 18 grains, suggesting they were struck soon after the introduction of the new English coinage in 1351. Later small lettering coins tend to fall a little short of this standard.
