Alfred Smith was born in Strood, Kent, on 8 August 1838 and attested for the Royal Engineers at Yately, Hampshire, on 8 February 1856, aged 17. He served with the 8th Company in China during the Second Opium War, and was discharged on 12 November 1877, after 21 years and 42 days’ service, of which 3 years and 21 days were spent soldiering in China.
