W. M. Strong served with Thorneycroft’s Mounted Infantry during the Boer War, and in addition to being awarded the Distinguish Conduct Medal was Mentioned in General Buller’s Despatch of 9 September 1900: ‘Privates A. Neilson and W. Strong are brought specially to notice for gallant conduct’ (London Gazette 8 February 1901).
