Thomas W. Smith served in France with the 3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment from 12 August 1914. The Battalion saw saw fighting at the Battle of Mons and the rearguard action at Solesmes, later taking part in the Battle of the Marne and Battle of the Aisne. Transferred to the 9th Battalion as Sergeant, Smith survived the campaign and was later issued the clasp to his 1914 Star.
