Royal Interest: A signed portrait photograph of HRH The Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, a black and white portrait photograph, the mount signed below ‘Margaret, 1970’, the reverse numbered in pencil ‘15250/1’, in a gilt tooled red leather easel back frame, by Smythson of Bond Street’, dimensions 23 x 18cm. £150-£200
Presented to Group Captain B.A. Primavesi CVO, and thence by descent.
Princess Margaret wears the Poltimore diamond tiara, commissioned from Garrard for Florence, wife of the second Baron Poltimore, and treasurer to Queen Victoria’s household between 1872-74. It was acquired to mark the Princess’s marriage to Anthony Armstrong-Jones in May 1960.
Part of a collection of 800 of Princess Margaret’s jewels auctioned by Christie’s, the tiara achieved the second-highest price of the night, selling for £926,400, almost five times its high estimate, to an anonymous buyer. Disappearing from the public eye as quickly as it arrived, its current whereabouts is unknown.
