Thomas Weekes (1743-1834), the proprietor of a museum of mechanical curiosities, clocks, automata, etc, established in 1788 in Tichborne Street, which combined as a retail outlet. Perhaps the most famous exhibit was the silver mechanical swan, now a centrepiece in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. Tichborne Street ran between Regent St and the present day Piccadilly Circus and disappeared in the construction of Shaftesbury Avenue.
