A 19th century shell cameo brooch, carved to depict ‘Day’, Eos scattering roses, her gaze fixed on a putto bearing a torch symbolising the dawn, within a gold surround of volutes and beaded detailing, length 5.6cm. £200-£400
The image is after Bertel Thorvaldsen’s ‘Day’ relief, 1815-1816. One of Thorvaldsen’s most popular reliefs, the sculpture merged Baroque traditions with contemporary Neoclassical artistic advancements.
Cameo in good condition. Mount has general wear commensurate with age. One area of solder evident where mount has been repaired with strengthening plate. Gross weight 20.6gm.
