Auction Catalogue
An unusual antique circular glass fob, engraved and painted to depict a three masted sailing vessel, with tall smoke stack to the centre, mounted within a metal frame, diameter 16mm.
£40-£60
Discovered by a metal detectorist at Guestwick, near Reepham, Norfolk, 2024.
The sailing vessel, being both sail and steam powered, bears resemblance to those used in the Polar Explorations, circa 1900-1914, and may be commemorative of either Captain Scott’s two expeditions to the Antarctica, in 1901-1904 and again 1910-14 or Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition between 1914-1916.
Traces of black paint/enamel survive.
Probably inset into a fob seal or swivel seal.
