A French gilt bronze twin section buckle by Line Vautin, 20th century, modelled with sprays of carnations in bud and flowerheads, signed ‘LINE VAUTIN’ to the reverse, dimensions 11 x 7.4cm. £200-£300

Line Vautin (1913-1997) was a French designer from a family of metalworkers. She was self-taught, mastering the skills of casting, chasing and gilding bronze by the time she was 14. She found prominence through participating in exhibitions including the 1937 Exposition Universelle in Paris, and opened galleries on Rue de Berri, and later Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. Her work was described as “bold, brilliant, barbaric and intricately crafted’ (New York Times) and caught the eye of leading designers including Yves Saint-Laurent and Ingrid Bergman. After her death, she was honoured with a major retrospective of her works at the Museé des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1999.

Damage visible to the reverse, evidence of repair. Some damage / breakage to tendrils at all four corners. Gilding worn.
Overall aesthetic good.
