Auction Catalogue
Elizabeth II (1952-2022), Decimal issues, Twenty Pence, 2021, struck on an unidentified foreign coin and on a round nickel-plated steel planchet, edge milled, 2.98g/12h (cf. KM 1336; cf. S G5). A highly unusual and conspicuous error by the Royal Mint; the specimen itself is in superb condition, lustrous and mint state, unique; accompanied by authenticating paperwork from the mint £300-£400
This unusual error is accompanied by microscopic photography and a letter of authentication from Chris Barker at the Royal Mint Museum, Llantrisant. The letter reads as follows:
“Dear -
Thank you for submitting your 2021 20p for authentication.
Examination by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry has indicated to us that the metallic composition of this piece is not correct, being nickel-plated steel. An alien blank, likely intended for overseas coinage production, has in this instance been struck between dies intended for the 20p.
Please find enclosed your coin by return.
Yours sincerely,
Chris Barker
Operations Manager”
