Norweb Collection, Part II, Spink Auction 48, 13 November 1985, lot 345 [from Spink 1958]; M. Hughes Collection, Spink Auction 139, 16 November 1999, lot 17; A.M. Fitts Collection, CNG Auction 121 (Lancaster, PA), 6-8 October 2022, lot 1330.

Potter (BNJ 1962) only recorded one other Bristol shilling with this distinctive bust (British Museum, Grueber 457), but a small number of others exist in private collections, including two which have passed through these rooms in recent years (see next Lot). It is generally understood that obverse and reverse dies of this issue were prepared for York, then in control of the under-treasurer, George Gale, but never used there and subsequently had their mint-marks overstruck prior to use at the other royal mints
