The 1787-dated shillings were a private venture of the Bank of England intended to please favoured customers, not as a circulating medium of exchange. The ubiquity of surviving high-grade specimens and the long retention of them in the Bank of England’s vaults are consistent with their distribution on a small scale (Manville and Gaspar, BNJ 2004, p.91).
