William Pearce was born in Brighton and enlisted in the 21st Hussars in October 1876, aged 18 years. Following active service out in Egypt from September 1884 to July 1885 - when he was one of 46 men from the 21st Hussars to be seconded for duty in the Light Camel Regiment - he was placed on the Army Reserve in October 1886.
