Clifford Went, who was advanced to Lance-Corporal in May 1912, first went into action in the regiment’s celebrated charge at Shabkadar on 5 September 1915 (his MIC entry confirms). Advanced to Corporal in December 1916 and to Sergeant in May 1920, he was transferred from the India Unattached List to the 16th Lancers in February 1922, but returned to the 21st prior to being discharged on compassionate grounds in December 1923.
