Ernest Nelson George Payne, who was advanced to Lance-Corporal in July 1915, first went into action in the regiment’s celebrated charge at Shabkadar on 5 September 1915 (his MIC entry confirms), when he served as a member of the regiment’s Machine Gun Section. He subsequently served as an Acting Sergeant in the M.G.C. during the Third Afghan War.
