William D’Olier Barrington was born on 17 August 1870. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Engineers, on 25 July 1890, becoming Lieutenant three years later, and Captain on 3 July 1901. He served in South Africa with the 38th Field Company from 7 January 1900, until 13 May 1903, on which date he died at Potchefstroom from enteric fever.
