A collection of more than 200 British gold coins is expected to fetch in the region of £300,000 at Noonans Mayfair on Wednesday, September 18, 2024. Amassed by the late John Sabberton – a British collector, it is being sold by his widow.

Peter Preston-Morely, Special Projects Director (Numismatics) at Noonans explained: “This is a small but advanced collection of British gold coins issued since the reign of George III and includes a number of rare specimens from the colonial mints in Australia, Canada, India and South Africa which were authorised to strike gold sovereigns in the 19th and early 20th centuries.”

The Sabberton sale includes numerous rarities that are expected to sell for five figures. These include a brilliant Proof Five Pounds from the reign of Queen Victoria and dating to 1887. Presented virtually as struck, this superb specimen is estimated at £20,000-26,000 [lot 522].

While an extremely rare 1917 London Sovereign from the reign of George V, with a few minor surface marks, but otherwise extremely fine – and with a better reverse – is estimated at £15,000-20,000 [lot 619].

One of the most historically important coins in the sale is an extremely rare high grade 1841 Sovereign and one of the finest known, also from the reign of Queen Victoria which is estimated at £10,000-£15,000 [lot 526].
An extremely rare 1911 Specimen Sovereign, issued in Ottawa, is in mint state and as struck has a guide price of £10,000-15,000 [lot 602].
