For those thinking about asking that all important question this Christmas, it is worth popping down to view the forthcoming auction of Jewellery, Watches and Objects of Vertu at Dix Noonan Webb in Mayfair (16, Bolton Street, W1J 8BQ). With over 100 different rings in the auction, which takes place on Tuesday 26th November at 1pm, there is something to suit everyone. Public Viewing is held on the weekdays from the preceding Wednesday (November 20) between 10am – 4.30pm and late night viewing is on Thursday, November 21 from 5pm - 7pm.

With a huge range of styles and estimates ranging from £50,000-£100, (offered for sale at auction at a fraction of the retail prices for comparable rings), every taste and budget is catered for. Classic diamond rings include a stunning 5.01 carat rectangular-cut diamond set ring, estimated at £36,000-£46,000 [Lot 285], a 1920s solitaire diamond ring, expected to fetch £8,000 - £10,000 [Lot 267], and numerous less expensive stylish diamond rings. Coloured gem stone rings include an untreated Burmese ruby and diamond cluster ring estimated at £7,000-£9,000 [Lot 261], a untreated Sri Lankan yellow sapphire ring at £2,000-3,000 [Lot 273] and an aquamarine ring by H Stern estimated at £500-700 [Lot 210].

Examples of signed rings by top makers, such as
Christian Dior, Bulgari, Cartier and Boucheron, include an enamel and gem set ‘Diorette’ diamond and gem set ring and earrings ensuite by Christian Dior, the bombé ring and matching earrings modelled as clusters of enamelled flowers, butterflies and ladybirds, and carrying an estimate of £2,400-3,400 [Lot 173], a mother o’pearl set Serpenti ring by Bulgari is expected to fetch £1,500-2,000 [Lot 224] and an 18ct white gold and amethyst tank ring by Cartier is offered at £600-800 [Lot 56].

Dix Noonan Webb – a brief history

In 1991, its first year of trading, the company held three medal auctions and sold 1,200 lots for a total hammer price of £553,000. Two years later it opened a coin department which also auctions commemorative medals and tokens and in 2015 DNW added jewellery to its sales calendar. Last year, it set up a standalone banknotes department and expanded into premises next door.

In 2018 DNW achieved a total hammer price of £11,676,580 and the total number of lots across all departments was 20,273. To date the company has sold in excess of 300,000 lots totalling £155 million.
