PREVIEW: THE FRANK GOON COLLECTION PART ONE 25 MARCH

Noonans continue to reveal new highlights for the upcoming Frank Goon collection auction, including this Malaya and British Borneo specimen $10,000, from 1953.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II had ascended the throne barely a year before, with the issuing Board of Commissioners of Currency Malaya and British Borneo coming into effect on 1 January 1952 under the common currency agreement.

With the establishment of the Board came the Malaya and Borneo dollar, which served as the currency for Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak, North Borneo, Brunei and the Riau archipelago from 1953 until 1967. It replaced the Malayan dollar and the Sarawak dollar at par.

The $10,000 ‘Titan’ note was the highest denomination. Frank Goon acquired this very rare, uncirculated and cancelled specimen, dated 21 March 1953, with the serial number A/1 00000.

It is signed by the chairman of the commissioners, W.C. Taylor, who was also Financial Secretary of Singapore, and is one of several Titans in the auction. The reverse features the 16 arms of the federated Malay States.

The estimate is S$60,000-80,000.
