100 Irish coins from the Collection of Michael J Mckeever, who lives in the USA, will be offered at Noonans Mayfair on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 2pm. The sale will also include 23 lots of Irish Coins from other properties.
Among the highlights is a rare groat (silver coin worth four pence) from the reign of King Richard III, who only reigned for 2 years. Struck at the Dublin mint is estimated at £1,200-1,500 [lot 445].
As Jim Brown, Coin Specialist at Noonans added: “Coins from the reign of Richard III are always very popular and this coin should attract a lot of attention.”
The sale includes many examples from the Hiberno-Scandinavian Period of the 11th and early 12th centuries. An extremely rare penny from the reign of Sihtric imitating the English Long Cross coinage, was made by a moneyer named Aelwine and carries an English mint signature although it was struck in Dublin. The estimate is £2,000-2,600 [lot 401]
Illustrated on the front cover of the catalogue is a very rare example of a Crown Groat from the Dublin mint, struck during the reign of Edward IV (1461-1470). It is estimated at £1,500-2,000 [lot 434].
