The Ashantee Medal was awarded for the 1873-74 Gold Coast campaign against King Kalkali of Ashantee. Fought in difficult and hostile terrain, the campaign resulted in a high incidence of sickness and disease, especially among the naval contingent, in addition to casualties from ferocious battles as the column approached Kumassi.
