The Piłsudski Mound, containing the soil from over 4,000 battlefields dating back to the late 18th century on which Polish soldiers fought, dedicated to Józef Piłsudski (1867-1935) and the heroes of the struggle for independence of the republic of Poland, was completed on 9 July 1937. Construction had begun almost 3 years earlier; the Mound suffered under the rule of the communists and has undergone several renovations since
