Central India Horse Officer’s Forage Cap
A fine and rare Officers folding forage side cap in maroon cloth with gilt wire edging, QVC gilt badge and two frontal buttons of type in use 1880-1906, label named in ink ‘G. P. Hood’, silk liner with London maker but distressed and torn, some minor moth damage but generally good for age £160-£200
Grosvenor Percy Hood was born on 24 September 1882; educated at Haileybury and accepted for a direct commission from the school and gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Border Regiment, January 1901; transferred to Indian Army as Lieutenant, Central India Horse, and was drowned in a boating accident at Agar, India, 12 April 1904.
The Royal Humane Society awarded bronze medals to Lieutenants D. G. Pitcher and H. D. S. Keighley, both of the Central India Horse, for their attempt to save Lieutenant Hood from drowning.
