John Brangwyn Page
John Brangwyn Page was born on 23rd August 1923. He was educated at Highgate School and King’s College Cambridge. He served as a pilot in the RAF during the Second World War and then joined the Bank of England in 1948. In 1953 he was seconded to the International Monetary Fund for two years. He was appointed Assistant Chief Cashier in 1966 and then First Deputy Chief Cashier in 1968. Two years later in 1970 he was given the post of Chief Cashier of the Bank of England, making him the 25th person to hold the post. He later said that it was a job that “he enjoyed more than anything else he had ever done”. He held the post for 10 years, until 1980, when he became an executive director of the bank before retiring in 1982. He died on 2nd February 2005.
The notes in the section were collected by or given to John Page in the course of his career at the Bank of England. They include some exceptionally rare prefixes and wonderful low serial numbers.
