A third experiment in January 1804, involved countermarking Spanish dollars with an octagonal stamp from the punch used for the Maundy Penny. Like the original attempt in 1797, coins with counterfeit stamps soon appeared in circulation and the experiment was again ultimately unsuccessful [Manville p.5].
