Merchant Issues - silver, Scotland, BUTE, Rothesay, Rothsay Mills, an uncertain Spanish-American cut Half-Dollar, obv. countermarked payable at rothsay mills ◊ around 2/6 in circle, and six-pointed star, 11.62g/12h (Manville 94a; Hodge 094aS-011a, this coin; Hodge, SNC January 2014, p.129; KM. CC94). Coin poor, counterstamp about fine £1,200-£1,500

W. Allen Collection, Spink Auction 34, 14-15 March 1984, lot 26; W.J. Noble Collection, Noble Numismatics Pty Auction 58B (Melbourne), 7-8 July 1998, lot 1578.

This is the second of two types a counterstamped 2/6 from Rothesay Mills. Most of the host coins (where visible) are dated in the 1780s and 1790s. (The 17 of the date is just discernible on this specimen), suggesting a circulation date from the early 1800s onwards [Manville p.179].
