The Portchester Hoard

Foreword

The coins of this hoard are all Stephen (1135 - 1154) “Awbridge” type Pennies (BMC type VII; North 881; Seaby 1282). They were discovered at Portsdown Hill, near Portchester, Hampshire, in a farmer’s field by a husband and wife metal detecting team. The nature of this hoard is all of the same type. It would appear to be a “purse” loss. The full story is featured in ‘The Searcher’ June 1995, No. 118. The coins have been catalogued by Peter Mitchell of A.H. Baldwin & Sons Ltd. the last two lots are being retained by the vendors, but are recorded here to complete the record.
