Owner’s envelopes.
In May 1946 the Indian government suspended the minting of .500 fine silver coins, and authorised the issue of half- and quarter-rupees in pure nickel. The following year nickel rupees were issued from Bombay and Lahore and the first rupees bearing this date were sent into circulation on 2 June 1947
