The Uniform Coinage of India, British Imperial Period: Patterns, George VI, nickel Pattern Quarter-Rupee, 1946, Calcutta, unsigned [by P.W.M. Brindley], crowned bust left, george vi king emperor, rev. tiger walking left in a prowling stance, date above and groundline below, quarter rupee above, small lettering, india below, no mint-mark below date, paw rupiya pao rupiya in Devanagri and Urdu at sides, raised rev. rim, edge grained, 19.1mm, 2.96g/12h (Prid. –; SW –; KM. –). Brilliant mint state, of the highest rarity; no other specimens believed known £3,000-£4,000

Owner’s envelope, “Date above lion”.

XRF analysis shows the metal content as 99.5% nickel, with traces of iron, manganese and copper. Interestingly, this coin displays clear relief diamonds or ‘pyramis’ on both sides (one on the obverse, three on the reverse); see footnote to Lot 1582
